A seasoned IT leader, Peter Layoun is a key player in the technological and human transformation of our firm.
Having arrived at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton in 2012, Peter quickly knew how to leverage his computer and management know-how. His determination and ability to generate results propelled him to the position of Vice-President – Information Technologies and Administration, which he has held for the past seven years.
“The year I was promoted, I had begun an MBA. Furthermore, I had two small children,” he recalls. “For two years, I worked about 85 hours a week. My employer supported me a lot during this time of my life by granting me a flexible schedule, for which I am very grateful.”
Technological innovation: A matter of heart and mind
Peter Layoun is convinced that technology, processes and human beings are three pillars of a successful technological change. This vision helped him pilot major projects, including the implementation of a new IT ticketing system on his first week and the revamping of the firm’s financial system, a colossal three-year project.
“This is the achievement of which I am most proud. Delays in the existing system prevented management from making crucial business decisions in a timely manner. With this optimization, the finance department has become more autonomous. Also, tasks that had previously been manual and time-consuming are now automated, thereby reducing errors and recoveries.”
He is also proud of creating a team dedicated to the human side of technological change, that assesses the impact on partners and employees and makes recommendations.
“This aspect is often overlooked during technological change, but it is crucial to take it into account to ensure that everything goes smoothly,” he explains.
A leader who believes in organic growth
As well as being a fervent believer in teamwork and collaboration, Peter is a fan of organic growth. He notes that many of his colleagues have moved on in the firm since they joined.
“What would I say to new employees? Work hard, your efforts will be recognized, and you’ll be able to achieve your professional goals.”
He also emphasizes the firm’s entrepreneurial spirit, which inspires and encourages him to excel. “Our organization is a firm with the soul of a small business. It trusts that its experts do their job. I feel that I have all the latitude I need to achieve the objectives that have been set for me.”
“I see myself here for several more years. I’m lucky enough to be able to continue to grow within the firm and take on new challenges. For example, I recently told my manager that I wanted to broaden my scope beyond IT. Following the retirement of an employee, I was given the opportunity to take on administrative responsibilities.”
Reconciling work and family life: A key element
In addition to his leadership role at our firm, Peter is a committed father and hockey coach. He greatly appreciates the work-life balance and his flexible schedule. “Practices can take place at 4 p.m. and I can count on one hand the times I haven’t been able to attend.”
He and his family are preparing to go to Europe. “My boys are soccer fans and absolutely want to see the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris, where Kylian Mbappé plays, and to see where Lionel Messi played in Barcelona,” he laughs.
Peter Layoun perfectly embodies the spirit of our firm: a skillful blend of technology, interpersonal skills and entrepreneurial spirit, with a human-centred approach. He continues to contribute to the success and growth of the firm with great determination.
